The prophets warn us that the Antichrist will be the greatest deception humanity has ever faced. Both he and the False Prophet will rise during a time when the world is desperately seeking leadership, much like today. The political world is looking for a leader, and the Jewish people await the Messiah. The true Messiah, Yeshua, will indeed arrive, but Bible prophecy shows that two figures, the Antichrist and the false Messiah, will appear to deceive the world for seven years.
And it is in Revelation 13 that we see what we might call the three “R’s” of the Antichrist: his Rise, his Reign, and his Ruin. In this chapter, the Antichrist appears with great power, using deception and imitation. But as we read further, we notice a slow yet dramatic change as he turns against those who once welcomed him and begins to force the world to worship him, doing so with growing fury. His decline becomes clear; his empire will be very short-lived.
What is especially significant in Revelation 13 is that the word “beast” appears 16 times in this chapter alone. Even as he seeks to hide behind deception and imitation, the Word of God repeatedly reminds the reader of his true identity. In the entire book of Revelation, the word therion, meaning “beast,” is used 38 times, either for the Antichrist, the False Prophet, or the false religious system that will soon rise over this earth; it always points back to their true nature.
But notice how he is described: like a leopard, a bear, and a lion. This is not meant to give us a literal image of his appearance, but rather to help us understand the character, history, and ferocity of the empire he will establish over the world.
These animals connect to the prophecies of Daniel 2 and 7, which describe four world powers that governed the world. Babylon is shown as a lion. Medo-Persia is represented by a bear, and the Greek empire by a leopard. Daniel also saw a fourth kingdom that greatly frightened him; it was so unusual and terrifying that he struggled to describe it. Its description seems to go beyond the historical Roman Empire, pointing to a future, more powerful form of rule unlike anything seen before.
This is the kingdom that John sees in Revelation: one that combines the power of the three empires Daniel saw into a single Kingdom. A lion, a bear, and a leopard.
While the leopard and the bear symbolize the strength, power, speed, and agility of the Antichrist’s operations, John describes the beast’s mouth as that of a lion, emphasizing the Antichrist’s words, speech, authority, and commanding presence. This is also significant because in Daniel, the lion represented Babel, the first great kingdom of human pride and rebellion against God. This same spirit reaches its full expression in Revelation 17–18, where Babylon is shown as the culmination of the world’s political and religious rebellion.
In the Hebrew Scriptures, the name is consistently Babel, reminding us that this rebellion began long before Israel, when the nations first united against God. This rebellion will also characterize the actions of the nations in the end times led by the Antichrist.
However, despite its fierceness and immense strength, Daniel provides an important detail that aligns with Revelation 13: the kingdom of the Antichrist will eventually begin to weaken and decline.
Observe the statue’s feet: they are partly iron and partly clay, two materials that do not mix. The prophecy explains that this kingdom will be both strong and fragile at the same time (Daniel 2:42). In verse 43, we are told that “they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not combine with pottery.” This means the kingdom will eventually collapse, beginning from within.
Iron symbolizes strength, while clay signifies fragility. The effort to merge the two reflects humanity’s continuous attempt to forge lasting power without God, aiming to create something that seems durable but is inherently unstable.
But such efforts cannot succeed. No power can ever duplicate or replace the power of God. Whether man, angel, or any other creature, all are too weak to stand against the Almighty. Now that we know the end from the beginning, we can better appreciate John’s description.
Let us go back to vs.2 and examine how the Antichrist will rise. It says that, “The dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority.” The Beast comes as an agent of Satan, empowered, commissioned, and sent by him. In this sense, he can be understood as the seed of the serpent.
We are reminded of the very first messianic prophecy in Genesis 3:15, where the Lord said to the serpent: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.” He is the seed of the serpent, just as Yeshua is the Seed of the Woman. Notice that, thousands of years ago, God foretold the serpent’s ultimate defeat—the crushing of his head.
It is striking, then, that in verse 3 of Revelation 13 we are told that one of the Beast’s heads appeared to have a fatal wound, yet was healed, as if trying to reverse or imitate the very judgment God had already declared. But no imitation can overturn God’s decree: what He has pronounced from the beginning will surely come to pass.
However, when the Antichrist appears, he will not be resisted at first; he will be welcomed, even celebrated, as the one who can solve the world’s crises. But what the world will accept as its greatest solution will, in reality, become its greatest deception. Such is the terrifying power of this deception that the Antichrist will accomplish what seems impossible: the world will bow in worship, not just to a man, but to the dragon himself, Satan… and they will not even realize it.
Verse 4 clearly states that “they worshipped the dragon.” No rational person would willingly choose to worship the devil, especially not the educated, the scientific, the logical. However, that is exactly what makes it so frightening. The deception will be so subtle, so convincing, and so perfectly disguised that humanity will be led in without any resistance.
They believe they are admiring power, following truth, and embracing progress. However, in reality, they are actually giving their allegiance to the one who is behind it all.
