We have all heard the tragic news of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and our hearts and prayers go out to his family. Charlie Kirk was only 31 years old and was known for holding open-air debates on campuses across the U.S., always boldly defending the Scriptures and standing firm for biblical values.

On September 10th 2025, as he was speaking at an outdoor event called Prove Me Wrong, he was shot in the neck in front of 3000 people. Why was Charlie Kirk killed?

It was not because he sought a political office, or because he stood against one nation or another. His assassination carries a deeper weight; Charlie Kirk was killed for brazenly proclaiming the principles of the Scriptures. He was a voice that stood on biblical foundations.

Where he died makes it even more shocking, at a university, a place that should represent learning, open debate, and freedom of speech. This tragedy shows the rising hostility toward those who stand firmly on the Word of God, even in the very places that are supposed to protect different viewpoints. But notice this: at the very same time and in the very same places, Jewish students are also being targeted.

Across Western universities, including here in Montreal, many Jewish students face harassment, discrimination, and even exclusion. Today we hear that 78% of students or graduates in North America said they avoided certain places or events because they are Jewish. So much so that, on March 10, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education sent letters to about 60 universities, warning them of consequences if they failed to better protect Jewish students from harassment and discrimination.

Charlie Kirk was silenced for speaking the truth of the Scriptures, and Jewish students are being silenced just because of their genealogical identity as Jews. Both point to a similar tragedy: universities, once intended to be sanctuaries of growth, discovery, and freedom, have become places where truth is assaulted, and the common denominator is spiritual.

Interestingly, most of the great universities in Europe and North America were created with the explicit purpose of promoting the knowledge of God. Harvard University, founded in 1636, originally bore the motto: “Truth for Christ and the Church.” Yale University, established in 1701 by the Puritans, was rooted in a strong evangelical movement. Other renowned universities that were likewise founded on Christian principles include Oxford and Cambridge in England, La Sorbonne in Paris, the University of Heidelberg in Germany, and the University of Leuven in Belgium. Their original platform was based on biblical values.

What we are seeing is that our faith, our beliefs in the Scriptures, are being assaulted today. As for us here at Beth Ariel, we put a few ads on Facebook and YouTube, concerning a 10-part study called “Understanding Israel,” and we have never experienced so much opposition with messages of hate. Today, even just mentioning the name Israel, and perhaps soon even the word Bible, can provoke an outpouring of hatred. But all of these things are in accordance with Bible prophecies.

Ultimately, the Scriptures tell us that a Western world leader will soon rise who will, according to Revelation 13:7, be granted to make war with the believers in order to overcome them. In Daniel 7:21, the passage of the Second Coming of the Messiah, speaks of one who will be waging war with the believer and overpowering them. Through this is future, we can see traces of this rising hatred.
