1. Bethlehem – thus, “the Star of Bethlehem”
2. Nazareth
3. Shiloh
Option B may be the stronger possibility.
According to Luke 2:39–40, Joseph and Mary returned to Nazareth after completing the forty days of purification required by the Law of Moses; that is, forty days after the birth of Yeshua (Luke 2:22). After that, the text provides no clear record of the family returning to Bethlehem.
Throughout the Gospels, Yeshua is consistently known as Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 21:11; 26:71; Mark 1:9; Luke 4:34; John 1:45). This suggests that Nazareth became the family’s established home.
Furthermore, when the Magi arrived, Yeshua was no longer a newborn. Matthew’s account suggests some time had passed, possibly up to two years later, which is why Herod ordered the death of boys two years old and under.
For these reasons, it is possible that the star led the Magi not to Bethlehem but to the place where Yeshua was living at the time, Nazareth. If so, one might ask whether it should more accurately be called the Star of Nazareth.
