Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud saying, “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!”
Here we see the cloud which is a recurrent motif of a theophany, that is a physical manifestation of God in the Hebrew Scriptures as in Exodus 13:21 where we read, The LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way; Or in Exodus 33:9 where we read that Whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud… the LORD would speak with Moses.
And here the cloud descended on this high mountain and testified that Yeshua is God’s beloved Son whom He sent for the salvation of man. This is the second time that the LORD’s voice, His Bat Kol, came down to earth to bear witness that Yeshua is the Messiah of Israel.
The first time was at His baptism. The second time was here at the Transfiguration and the third time was in John 12:28, right after the Triumphant Entry, just before His trial and crucifixion. Here we read, Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
Let us be keenly aware of the presence of the Tri-Unity of God leading to this most important historical event; the resurrection which changed the course of this world. We have the Spirit in the cloud which they call the Shekinah Glory, the Voice of the Father, and the Son, the Messiah Himself.
