Iran in Prophecy  Who is Gog?

Last Thursday, Israel launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, killing three Iranian commanders and approximately six nuclear scientists. Today, the conflict continues as both nations exchange fire, but Israel currently holds a significant advantage, having established full air superiority over Tehran. And thank God for this, for He is protecting His people.

However, it was a major and bold move to attack Iran. Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke to the nation and told them that Israel is at a decisive point in its history and was compelled to attack because of the threat to the country’s very survival. This is the third major war in just a few months that Israel is going through, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran. This is without counting the Houthis and the different groups within Israel, like at those in the West Bank.

As for this war with Iran, Israel spent years preparing for this attack, deploying commandos to build covert drone bases inside Iran and smuggling in precision weapons systems designed to destroy Iranian surface-to-surface missile launchers targeting Israel, as well as their surface-to-air defense systems.

That is why today they have supremacy over Iranian skies. They named this attack Operation Rising Lion based on Numbers 23:24 which says, Behold, a people rises like a lioness, and as a lion it lifts itself. But how are these events playing in the Scriptures’ prophetic plan?

Let me begin by saying that among all the nations mentioned in end-times prophecies, Iran stands out as one of the most clearly identifiable—likely due to its longstanding and deep-seated hostility toward Israel. However, its actions—such as constructing nuclear facilities and providing funding, missiles, and support to the Houthis, Hamas, Hezbollah, and various terrorist groups within Israel—do not align with the specific role the Bible outlines for Iran in the end times.

What we may be witnessing today is yet another shift, setting the stage for the final confrontation at Armageddon. One thing we can be certain of is that the Lord, the God of Israel is at work in the Middle East. Where is Iran in prophecy? Of the many places it is mentioned, at the very end, the Bible says that this country will take part in the last war of Gog and Magog which is the equivalent to Armageddon as understood in rabbinical commentaries.

It will attack Israel along with nine other countries including Russia, Turkey. These are listed in the Book of Ezekiel chapters 38-39 which we will review one day very soon.

So, what we can say so far is that this current war will subside, but it will eventually lead to, at first, this 7-year peace treaty as prophesied by Daniel and it will then move onto more severe conflicts involving more countries leading to Armageddon. As for Iran of the 10 countries listed in Ezekiel 38, it is clearly identified as Persia, and it is only recently, back in 1932 that the name changed from Persia to Iran, and again, if it is so well identifiable, is it because of its government which is the most outspoken country in the world against Israel?

For instance, right in the Iranian capital city Tehran they have a huge clock displaying a count down to the days until the destruction of Israel. Their supreme leader prophesies that by 2040, there will no longer be the State of Israel.

Why are they so fiercely opposed to a nation that is 80 times smaller than they are? It is a deep, irrational hatred—one that the Lord refers to in Ezekiel as an “eternal hatred.” It is unwavering and non-negotiable, and that hate extends beyond Iran to many of Israel’s neighbouring nations.

Two things I want to add to the role of Iran these days: First, in the passage of Ezekiel 38-39 where Persia is clearly mentioned, the Bible indicates who is behind all of this: while the prophecy speaks of a very powerful assembly of armies which will fight Israel, God does not address any of them but only one individual named Gog. He is at the head of this war. In vs.3 He says, Behold I am against you, O Gog. His name is mentioned 12 times in these 2 chapters. He, Gog is directly addressed, rather than a country per se.

Who is Gog?

He is unknown but for rabbinical commentators, Gog represents the apex of evil. He is the name behind all those who work against God and His people. How interesting that in Ezekiel 38:1 he is called el-Gog which could be read, the god-Gog. He must be the evil one, Satan himself the leader of these principalities, and powers, and rulers of the darkness of this age, the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Eph. 6:12).

This is where the origin of evil stems. Evil likes to hide in the darkness, like a serpent that is coiled up waiting for its prey, but God uncovers it all. Gog then, will, at the end, and very soon, blind these nations and will lead them against Israel, the place where God said He will establish His eternal kingdom. Gog will try to prevent Yeshua from coming back.

This is why he does this all, triggering more hatred against Israel because, Jerusalem is the place where Jesus will come back and establish His capital city; that is the spiritual aspect behind this war and all the others. It makes no sense otherwise that so many nations gang up on this one very small nation.

Second, there is very good news for the people of Iran. In the end, many will turn to Yeshua; the Lord spoke of three countries that will be linked by a highway during the Messianic Times: this is what we read in Isaiah 19:24-25, In that day Israel will be the third party with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth, whom the Lord of hosts has blessed, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.” Iran is part of the Assyrian territory and at the end, a remnant of Iran will be saved, and I may say it has already begun. Today there are many reports indicating that a significant number of people in Iran are converting to Yeshua after experiencing dreams and visions.

In the meantime, let us be in prayer for both Israel and the people of Iran so that the evil forces will soon be subdued.
