Although Acts 1:14 records the first prayer meeting of the New Testament church, it is not the first such gathering in Scripture. Isaiah 8:18 and Malachi 3:16 could be seen as gatherings of believers, perhaps for the study of the Word and prayer, but Daniel 2:17–18 is the earliest passage in the Bible that explicitly records a small group coming together for the specific purpose of seeking God in prayer. Daniel gathered Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah so that together they might ask God for mercy and for the revelation of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream.
Even more remarkable is God’s immediate response. “Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a night vision“ (Dan. 2:19). Their united prayer was followed by united praise, as Daniel burst into a hymn of thanksgiving on behalf of the group (Dan. 2:20–23).
